Two goals by 17-year-old Eliesse Ben Seghir were enough to take Monaco back to the winning column and in contention for European positions in the team’s first match after the World Cup.
Ben Seghir is the youngest player to score two goals in his debut in the last 50 seasons, his contribution helped Monaco beat Auxerre (2-3), and Monaco had lost against Marseille in the last match before the World Cup.
Ben Seghir dominated in the second half
Eliesse Ben Seghir started the second half instead of Wissam Ben Yedder, and his presence on the pitch was essential for his team to untie a match that seemed even at halftime.
Auxerre went ahead with a penalty by M'Baye Niang, but Monaco tied before the end of the first half with another penalty by Ben Yedder.
An hour into the match, Ben Seghir scored the 1-2 from an assist by Aleksandr Golovin, but an own goal by Youssouf Fofana tied the match once more.
But the best was yet to come. Five minutes from the end of the match, Ben Seghir took the ball on the wing, found the space, and shot from outside the goal zone, beating goalkeeper Benoit Costil. It was the winning goal for Monaco.
He is the youngest player to score twice in his debut in Ligue 1 with Monaco since Thierry Herry in 1995 at 17 years, and 255 days old.
With this victory, Monaco is in fifth place, the same points as Marseille in fourth.
