PSG’s resolutions for 2023

The team’s top priority is the Champions League, although it’s also essential to extend Messi’s contract

París
The end of the year is upon us, so it’s the perfect time to evaluate what 2022 has been and to start thinking about 2023. After a great start to the season, PSG has set its goals for the upcoming year with a clear goal at the top of the league: Winning the Champions League. The second item on the list is to extend Messi’s contract after he won the World Cup in Qatar.

Winning the Champions League or facing another crisis
Europe is PSG’s Achilles heel, but the team is looking to break the curse this season. In previous seasons, the club has faced the Champions League with more anxiety than ambition, and the journey to the trophy has become irrelevant for the club if they don’t win the trophy in the end, which brings tension to a locker room that knows what losing feels like. They’ll face Bayern Munich in February, their first trial by fire of the season.

Messi’s continuity
Messi’s contract renewal is another card on the table for PSG. There’s a verbal agreement and both parties are happy with the terms of the deal, the only thing missing is Messi’s signature, which will be on the contract by early January. It’s still not clear whether the extension is for just one season or if there’s an option for more time, until 2025, but what’s important is to guarantee the World Champion’s continuity with the team, a star that takes PSG’s brand to another level.

Balance the books
Despite the team’s growth, one of the challenges for Al Khelaifi heading into 2023 is to keep the team in the black after losses of up to 370 million euros last season. The team was also fined 10 million euros by UEFA for breaking fair play rules.

The new sports city
Another big project for the club is the construction of its new sporting complex in Poissy, 30km from Paris. It’s expected that the first team will relocate there for training in the summer of 2023. There will be 17 pitches in total, 5 of them with synthetic grass, and the three that belong to the first team will feature the same heating system as Parc des Princes. The club has invested at least 300 million euros.

Going for the first Women’s Champions League
The women’s squad will remain at the Camp des Loges facility starting next season. Like Christophe Galtier, coach Gérard Prêcheur will also be expected to win the Champions League. Despite the issues in the locker room, which seem irreparable after the issues with Hamraoui last year, the challenge is to break Lyon’s dominion of the competition and be competitive in Europe.
