A few days ago, Mundo Deportivo anticipated that Barcelona would be able to actually use some of the money made from the selling of Memphis Depay. The operation finally reached its destination, with 3 million euro headed to the Catalan wallet, plus one million more for objectives.
Barcelona will now have the chance to cover the loss of the Dutch striker: They’ll be able to spend 3 million euro. This money comes from two variables. On the one hand, due to the cut in the salary mass, given Barcelona will no longer have to pay for Depay’s contract. On the other hand, thanks to a new rule by LaLiga for clubs exceeding their salary limit, FC Barcelona will be able to invest 40% in an operation in this winter market.
Memphis Depay’s total salary during last season with Barcelona reached 11 million euro. Talking about net salary, it would go around 5.5 million euro. Considering we’re already halfway through the season, Barcelona would still have to pay Depay around 5.5 million as gross salary, roughly 2.75 million euro. Applying this new rule of 40%, Barcelona would have 2.2 million euros to be able to invest in another footballer.
But that’s not the only issue. There’s also the margin derived from the sale of the player and where the Barça club secures those three million euro. Here, Barcelona can invest 25% of the total benefit of the transfer. This means 750,000 euros considering only the 3 million from the sale because the variables are never taken into account. Then, adding both accounts of 2.2 million and 750,000 euros, Barcelona will have 3 million euros to invest. And they'll be able to do so, if the club deems it necessary, to sign a player in this winter market. It would be an operation that will not find any opposition from LaLiga since it is within the margins of the norm established by the employer.
However, if Barcelona doesn’t spend that money now, the club can save it for next season because the new rule generates both the right to sign as well as saving for the 2023-24 season.
