Nicolás Otamendi has been a consistent part of Argentina’s starting eleven throughout the World Cup his country won and, returning to the day-to-day reality of club football, a new scenario opens up for him ahead of the near future.
Otamendi’s contract with Benfica expires in June 2023, and with his possible extension currently in standby, he will be free to start negotiations with other clubs.
The intentions of the Lisbon team is to extend their relationship with Otamendi for two more seasons, but up until now, the negotiations have not come to fruition. And after his price went up in the World Cup, things could get complicated for Benfica.
Otamendi arrived at Da Luz in the summer of 2020, from Manchester City, and back then it seemed then that this could be his last adventure in Europe before returning to Argentina. But now everything has changed. After a very good World Cup performance, Otamendi’s plans consist of staying in Europe. Meanwhile, River Plate are keeping an eye on him, but it seems very difficult for the ‘Millonario’ to sign him.
