A new chapter has emerged in the ongoing saga surrounding the tense silence between Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks, and this time, it could escalate into open conflict.
According to The Athletic and ESPN, the Wisconsin franchise wants Antetokounmpo to sit out the remainder of the season following his latest injury, a move the superstar is refusing to accept.
The two sides have reportedly held multiple meetings over the past 24 hours, but the two-time MVP has remained firm in his stance.
The Bucks announced Tuesday that the Greek forward is dealing with a knee injury, without providing a timetable for his return.
However, Shams Charania reported that Antetokounmpo is expected to miss at least a week while recovering from what appears to be a knee hyperextension and a bone bruise.
Regardless, Milwaukee is leaning toward effectively shutting down the season, embracing a losing strategy to secure a stronger position in the upcoming draft, given that a playoff push seems increasingly unrealistic.
Doc Rivers’ team currently sits 11th in the Eastern Conference at 28–40, well behind the Charlotte Hornets, who hold the 10th and final play-in spot at 35–34.
Charlotte has 13 games remaining, while Milwaukee has 14, making it logical for the Bucks to shift their focus toward the draft and protect Antetokounmpo from a potentially more serious injury, especially amid growing speculation of a possible trade.
Antetokounmpo has already missed 32 games this season, the highest total of his career, largely due to recurring right calf strains.
That said, the Greek star has also been part of the issue he has privately voiced frustration about: Milwaukee’s inability to truly contend for a championship in recent years.
In their last three consecutive first-round exits, he was injured in two of those series, missing half of the 2023 matchup against the Miami Heat and the entire 2024 series against the Indiana Pacers.
Even so, Antetokounmpo remains a dominant force in his prime at age 31, averaging 27.6 points, 10 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game while shooting 62% from the field.
Still, the time for a split may have arrived. The Bucks have failed to properly build around their franchise player, with their inability to find a replacement for Damian Lillard proving to be the final straw.
Antetokounmpo may have already played his last game for the only franchise he has ever known. But he is not backing down. A battle is brewing in Milwaukee.
