The countdown to the LaLiga title may have truly begun after Barcelona’s emphatic win over Espanyol in their first appearance at the new Spotify Camp Nou. A dominant first half, highlighted by Ferran Torres’ brace, gave the hosts a clear advantage, but the second half demanded a stronger push from the league leaders before they sealed a 4–1 victory thanks to goals from Lamine Yamal, in yet another standout performance, and Marcus Rashford.
Despite the late scoring surge, Barcelona found themselves under pressure after the break in a game that had seemed firmly under control early on. Espanyol, largely harmless for long stretches, stayed alive thanks to goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic and forced the Blaugrana to stay focused until the final minutes. There had been plenty of discussion about resting players ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League clash, but Hansi Flick opted for the safer route: securing LaLiga points now rather than chasing a difficult European comeback.
Backed by a packed Camp Nou eager to celebrate a derby win, Barcelona approached the match with patience but clear intent to secure all three points quickly. Flick’s lineup reflected rotation, but not at the expense of competitiveness.
Pedri, despite showing signs of fatigue, started and played the full match. Lamine Yamal, another candidate for rest, was decisive from the outset, providing both assists for Ferran’s goals inside the opening 25 minutes. Two chances, two precise deliveries from the young winger, and two clinical finishes from Ferran set the tone. Gavi returned to the starting lineup, while Pau Cubarsí also featured despite being suspended for the upcoming European fixture. Key players such as João Cancelo, Robert Lewandowski, Rashford, Dani Olmo, and Jules Koundé were initially rested.
Barcelona quickly tilted the match in their favor, dominating possession against a deeply positioned Espanyol side that only threatened sporadically. The tempo remained controlled, with the hosts probing patiently against a compact defensive block that offered little attacking danger in return.
The breakthrough came from Lamine Yamal, who initiated a move that led to a corner. He delivered the set piece himself, and Ferran Torres rose at the far post to head home. Not long after, a recovery by Cubarsí sparked a fluid attacking sequence: Gavi linked play with a precise pass to Yamal, who spotted Ferran’s run behind the defense. With Dmitrovic advancing, Ferran calmly lifted the ball past him to double the lead.
Barcelona had chances to put the game beyond reach before halftime, with Yamal narrowly missing from a free kick and Dmitrovic producing key saves in a sequence of rebounds involving Fermín López and Eric García.
The missed opportunities proved costly when Espanyol pulled one back. A quick transition led by Edu Expósito ended with Pol Lozano finishing unmarked inside the box, cutting the deficit to 2–1 and shifting the momentum.
A different game emerged after that goal. Espanyol took more risks, sensing an opportunity, while Barcelona needed to respond. Rashford missed a clear chance early in the second half, and João Cancelo tested Dmitrovic soon after. Flick was unable to rotate as much as planned, with the match still in the balance.
Eventually, the spaces left by Espanyol worked in Barcelona’s favor. Marc Casadó delivered a perfectly timed through ball to Lamine Yamal, who rounded the goalkeeper and scored the third to restore control. Shortly after, Frenkie de Jong marked his return by driving into the box and setting up Rashford at the far post, who made no mistake to complete the 4–1 scoreline.
