Real Madrid suffered a 2-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals, a result that leaves the Spanish side facing an uphill battle and needing a comeback in Munich next week.
One statistic from the match at the Santiago Bernabéu highlights Madrid’s shortcomings. Carlo Ancelotti’s team covered a total of 101.9 kilometers, compared to Bayern’s 110.9 kilometers.
That nine kilometer gap raises concerns, especially considering Madrid’s much higher work rate in their previous tie against Manchester City, where they ran 113.7 kilometers in the first leg and 114.5 in the second.
Individually, Fede Valverde was Madrid’s most active player, logging 10.05 kilometers.
However, five Bayern players surpassed him: Aleksandar Pavlovic led the way with 11.80 kilometers, followed by Joshua Kimmich with 11.76, Michael Olise with 10.66, Luis Díaz with 10.39, and Josip Stanisic with 10.09.
The contrast underlines not only the difference on the scoreboard, but also Bayern’s physical dominance, as the German side took a significant step toward reaching the semifinals.
