Hansi Flick has built a strong reputation as a knockout-stage specialist, whether in two-leg ties or single-elimination formats. Across his time with Bayern Munich and Barcelona, he has managed 41 knockout matchups, advancing or winning 37 of them and losing just four.
Two of those defeats came with Barcelona (against Inter in the Champions League semifinals and Atlético Madrid in the Copa del Rey semifinals) and two more during his Bayern tenure, against Holstein Kiel in the German Cup and Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarterfinals.
At Barcelona alone, Flick has overseen 18 knockout ties, including finals, winning 16 and losing only two.
That translates to an 88 percent success rate, which rises to an outstanding 90 percent when factoring in his overall record, figures that firmly establish him as a true specialist in these high-pressure scenarios.
Since taking charge of Barcelona, Flick has delivered an impressive run. He kicked off the 2024–2025 season by beating Barbastro 4–0 in the Copa del Rey round of 32.
He then defeated Athletic Club 2–0 in the Spanish Super Cup semifinals and went on to thrash Real Madrid 5–2 in the final.
His team continued its dominance in the Copa del Rey, eliminating Real Betis (5–1) in the round of 16 and Valencia (5–0) in the quarterfinals, before falling to Atlético Madrid in the semifinals over two legs (4–4 and 0–1).
In the Champions League, Barcelona advanced past Benfica (0–1 and 3–1) and Borussia Dortmund (4–0 and 3–1) before losing to Inter in the semifinals. They later defeated Real Madrid 3–2 in the Copa del Rey final.
So far in the 2025–2026 campaign, Flick’s Barcelona has continued to deliver in knockout competitions.
They beat Athletic Club 5–0 and Real Madrid 3–2 in the Spanish Super Cup, and advanced in the Copa del Rey with wins over Guadalajara (2–0), Racing (2–0), Albacete (2–1), and Atlético Madrid (3–0), although they were later eliminated by Atlético with a heavy 4–0 defeat.
In European competition, Barcelona cruised past Newcastle United with a 1–1 draw in the first leg followed by a dominant 7–2 win.
