Lieke Martens, 33, and her husband Benjamin van Leer shared heartbreaking news on Tuesday.
The couple had recently announced they were expecting their second child, but the pregnancy was affected by complications, as the former player revealed through her Instagram stories.
“We are deeply affected,” wrote the former Barcelona star, who has since retired and last played for Paris Saint Germain.
“This loss affects us deeply. As a family, we want to take the time and space we need to process it and begin to heal. Thank you for your understanding and support,” Lieke and Benjamin said in a joint message.
Martens and Van Leer have been married since 2023 and welcomed their first child together last year. In September 2025, Martens officially retired from professional soccer to focus fully on her family.
